Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the protocol currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
