The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Barely Knew Supported Me Obtain the Position That Altered My Path

During the late 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a friend. Because my travel mate was interested in pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had booked a two-week stay there en route to London.

We reached the postgrad residence, a large 10-storey building on the UWS named International House. Once we unpacked, we went directly to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was the reason he was familiar with it. He suggested that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The man from Iraq came up to me and told me that he had organized a discussion for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I didn't board the aircraft to London.

I held that position for a trio of years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I never saw that student again and I am unaware of his identity, but his selfless gesture transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the confidence or self-belief to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
