Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure began. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
