EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
