Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Fighters Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a colorful mix of heroes, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and malevolent powers growing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Revealing details for the third episode of Campaign 4 lie ahead.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of characters who will branch out from the main group to embark on their independent quest, apart from the other two tables.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan Vale (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given an extensive roster, it was evident from the start that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who are drawn to a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where non-violent answers are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might appear out of place, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

First, the team knows exactly where to proceed after a brutal opening clash with The Crow Keepers.

An old friend of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into the secret base, attacking the character, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then cleared his liabilities and escaped to a fortified location in the remote area, above the city, with Teor’s brother close behind.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each adventurer has a personal reason to leave the city the urban setting:

  • Thimble, as the companion and closest confidant, wants vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows Timmony and warns that it is a hostile environment.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their status as important members in the powerful family could assist the group reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, The fighter vowed a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now go with him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric betrayed the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is targeted for elimination by the family.

This leaves them few options but to head to Timmony in pursuit of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to round up the Explorers and Planners groups.

Fans can anticipate discovering which characters will be where in the story’s concluding setup installment, released on next week.
